Tax Deductions for Celiacs

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAX DEDUCTIONS ON GLUTEN-FREE PRODUCTS

Individuals who are diagnosed with celiac disease may be able to receive tax deductions for expenses associated with gluten-free foods and products. Below are steps to help you through the procedures and paperwork

STEP ONE: Get A Doctor's Note

You will need an official, written celiac diagnosis from your doctor. This document is to be submitted with your other forms (In Step 4). Keep a copy for your records.

STEP TWO: Save Your Grocery Receipts

Keep receipts of all your gluten-free purchases: grocery stores, bakeries, or anywhere else you purchase gluten-free items.

STEP THREE: Calculate

Calculate the difference between gluten-free foods and non-gluten-free foods. The difference between these prices is tax deductible. For example, if a pound of wheat flour is $0.89 and a pound of rice flour is $3.25, then you can deduct $2.36 for each pound of rice flour you purchased.

STEP FOUR: File A Form 1040

Fill out form 1040 schedule A for medical deductions.
